Why do we procrastinate?

My patients tell me that procrastination is one of the hardest problems they face. Of course everyone procrastinates but people with ADHD find it hard to engage in projects in which they have zero interest. “It’s boring“ it’s repetitive“ “I can’t stand doing that“ of course everybody feels that way from time to time, but people with ADHD have enormous anxiety around procrastination

The more procrastination the more anxiety; the more anxiety the more procrastination. How to break this vicious cycle?
People with ADHD tend to have black and white thinking or all or nothing thinking. This may lead to imagining a gigantic task. Instead try breaking the seemingly impossible task down into very small steps. Another strategy that often works is to get a buddy, or someone to whom you have accountability for the completion of a task.
Become aware of when you're engaging in black and white thinking and see if you can add more nuance.
These are just some of the strategies people have come up with.
